While UMCOR will continue to respond to relief needs around the world and will continue its ongoing missions, UMCOR’s approach has changed with regards to sourcing supplies needed in other countries. Instead of shipping goods from the United States to other countries, which has the potential to harm local economies in those countries, UMCOR will purchase needed supplies in the country in which it is operating. UMCOR works with local United Methodist churches, ACT Alliance, ecumenical, and interfaith partners to respond to disasters. As part of a comprehensive disaster response strategy, UMCOR coaches these partners to purchase local materials that are appropriate to the context. This is consistent with best practices and accountability standards. This change means that UMCOR will only collect three types of relief kits (Cleaning Kits, Hygiene Kits, and School Kits), and has updated the list of included items.
