When a King was preparing to enter a town for the first time, it was common practice for people to go ahead of them and prepare the town. They would make sure the infrastructure could support the King and his entourage and make safety a top priority. When Jesus, our King, came to earth, John the Baptist went ahead of him to also prepare the way. However, he was less concerned about the state of the infrastructure and more concerned about the state of people’s hearts. From the beginning, this set the tone of what was most important to Christ our King.
