UMCOR Disaster Relief Continues

While the world struggles with the COVID-19 crisis, UMCOR continues to respond to natural disasters. It has awarded solidarity grants to The Mississippi UMC, South Carolina UMC, and North Georgia UMC to support initial relief efforts for the damage caused by severe weather over Easter weekend. Pray for the families of those who died and for communities that sustained damage to homes and buildings, including a number of UMC churches.

COVID-19 Outbreak Food Insecurity

COVID-19 Outbreak Food Insecurity

The needs have been great and will continue to be so. Sewickley Community Food Pantry will be trying to fill the gaps for local families; additionally, the SUMC Pastor’s Pantry has been utilized more frequently in recent weeks. To support the greater community, the Outreach Committee forwarded two financial donations to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Diapers, wipes, pancake mix and syrup were purchased to support the Sewickley Food Pantry.

Native American Special Sunday Offering

Native American Special Sunday Offering

One tribe in North America has told this story for centuries: when people “pale as birch” crossed the great water in large canoes, they brought with them “The Black Book.” However, the bringers of the physical Book could not have known what it would mean and look like to be Native and a follower of Jesus.

Did you turn in your fines? If not, it is not too late to support the Fish Farming Program at the Nyadire United Mission to help families with food insecurity. If you followed the calendar or simply want to donate to this worthwhile initiative, be sure to indicate Lenten Fines on your gift or on EasyTithe.

The Pittsburgh Blessing

The Pittsburgh Blessing

What started out as a crazy idea, turned into a powerful worship moment in our city. In less than 2 weeks, nearly 30 churches unified to sing a blessing over our city of Pittsburgh. This video was revealed during many of the Easter online services in churches across the city of Pittsburgh during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Caring for Our Neighbors

Caring for Our Neighbors

The Outreach Committee purchased 5 cases of various sized diapers and 4 cases of baby wipes using its budget allocation. Those were delivered to Sewickley Community Center Food Pantry (Pantry) on April 6th, along with 11 Easter bags and 11 Giant Eagle gift cards. Sewickley UMC's liaison with the food pantry, Miriam Rader, was amazed that the church had been able to collect Easter bags during the current crisis.

Past Lenten Programs

Past Lenten Programs

We were not able to hold our Lenten dinners and programs this year. Missing that fellowship (and food!) is one of many disappointments we’ve had to face in the current state of affairs. Might I suggest that in lieu of that, you look back and enjoy a program from the past? Here’s Leap of Faith’s production, Alive!, from 2014.

Easter Zoom Sunday School & Goodie Bags

Easter Zoom Sunday School & Goodie Bags

On Easter Sunday, we will hold a Sunday school class for the kids over Zoom at 11 am in order to let them celebrate together and see their friends. Parents are encouraged to pick up a goodie bag for each child through 5th grade from the box at door #7 by the church parking lot. The goodie bags will be available from Sunday, April 5 at 2 pm through Friday, April 10. Each bag will contain some eggs for a mini Easter egg hunt, sidewalk chalk, and other goodies for the kids to enjoy. Email Susie.fhnc@gmail.com for the zoom link or more information on how to participate!

Virtual Sunday School

Virtual Sunday School

Ms. Susie will post a Sunday school lesson, geared to preschool, but available to everyone, on the church homepage and YouTube channel each week we are not able to meet in person. Encourage your kids to watch, and feel free to share with friends and family!

Easter “Flower” Dedications

Easter “Flower” Dedications

This year, we won't be together to celebrate Easter, and the chancel won’t be adorned with beautiful Easter flowers. But, if you would like to make a “virtual dedication,” fill out the form here no later than Tuesday, April 7. There is no cost, and there won’t be any actual flowers. The dedications will be shared with our SUMC Church Family for the Easter service.
