Video Review:  "The Bible Collection"

by, Greta Price

Our Patton Library has some wonderful videos in it.  "The Bible Collection" series, based on Old Testament stories, is especially nice.  They feature well-known actors and great filming.  My husband and I have watched "Abraham," "Joseph," "Moses," and most recently, "David."  (I figured since both my father and my husband are named David, I had better learn more about the Bible character for whom they are named.)  These videos are true to the Bible and offer a good introduction to these famous Old Testament men, and are an easy way to help you remember their stories.

"David" tells King David's story from shepherd boy to king of Israel.  David, played by Nathaniel Parker who acted in Wide Sargasso Sea, is the youngest son in his family, yet is chosen by God through the prophet Samuel (Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek) to be the king of Israel.  His rise to power is met with tests of adversity--from the battle with the Philistine giant Goliath to the personal threat from King Saul (Jonathan Price, EVITA).

A word of caution to parents:  There are battle scenes in this movie that depict the many battles in which Israel was involved during David's time.  These would be scary for elementary-age+? children.

Find out more about the man who is credited with having written many of the Psalms by borrowing this video from the Patton Library.
